TRAFFIC STOP – FELON IN POSSESSION OF A FIREARM

NAPOLEONVILLE – Assumption Parish Sheriff Leland Falcon reports the arrest of
Michael J. Coleman, 33, of 3211 West Park Avenue, Gray, LA, on felony gun possession charges following a traffic stop on LA 308 south of Napoleonville on Thursday evening.
A uniformed patrol deputy observed a vehicle commit a traffic violation and initiated a stop of that vehicle. The deputy made contact with the driver now identified as Michael J. Coleman and engaged Coleman in an officer / violator interview. During the investigative stop, the deputy determined that Michael J. Coleman was driving under a suspended driver’s license.
Due to conditions observed during the stop, the deputy requested and was granted consent to search. As a result of that search, a 9mm handgun was located and seized. It was determined that Michael J. Coleman was a prior convicted felon and therefore could not legally possess a firearm.
Michael J. Coleman was arrested and booked into the Assumption Parish Detention Center on charges of:
*Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon
*Driving Under a Suspended Driver’s License
*Driving on Roadway Laned for Traffic
Michael J. Coleman posted a $50,000 commercial bond.
