RED RIBBON WEEK
RED RIBBON WEEK
NAPOLEONVILLE – Red Ribbon Week was celebrated in all schools nationwide last week including here in Assumption Parish.
Red Ribbon Week is the largest drug abuse prevention campaign in the United States and is celebrated each year from October 23 thru October 31.
The campaign’s purpose is to educate all children about the effects of dangerous drugs and work towards keeping all children drug free.
Enrique “Kiki” Camarena was a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agent who was tortured and murdered in Mexico in 1985. In honor of Agent Camarena’s memory and his battle against illegal drugs, friends and neighbors began wearing red satin ribbons. Parents began forming groups using Agent Camarena as their model while embracing his belief that one person can make a difference. These coalitions adopted the symbol of Agent Camarena’s legacy, the red ribbon. Today the red ribbon serves as a catalyst to mobilize communities one week each and every year to educate and encourage participation in drug prevention activities.
Sheriff Leland Falcon thanks all who participated in not only carrying on the legacy of Agent Camarena, but to also educate all children of the dangers of illegal drugs.
