NARCOTICS ARREST - Wednesday, July 6, 2016

Assumption Parish Sheriff Leland Falcon reports the arrest of James T. Acosta, Jr. on Saturday night, July 2, 2016, following a traffic stop by the Uniformed Patrol Division.

Acosta, a white male who is 47 years of age residing at 442 Highway 83, Franklin, LA., was westbound on LA. 70 approaching Grand Bayou when he attempted to pass another westbound vehicle in a marked no passing zone.

A uniformed patrol officer, also westbound on LA. 70, initiated a stop of Acostaís vehicle. The alert deputy noticed an item resembling a smoking device fall from Acostaís lap to the ground.

The deputy called for a K-9 drug detection unit. The driverís door had remained open and the K-9 alerted on the door, then alerted to a brown bag on the seating area. Deputies located suspected marijuana and crack cocaine along with an open alcohol container.

Acosta was transported to the parish jail and booked on the following charges:

*Possession of Marijuana, Third Offense;

*Possession of Cocaine;

*Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Third Offense;

*Failure to Appear

*Passing in a No Passing Zone

*Expired MVI Tag; and

*Possession of an Opened Alcoholic Beverage in a Motor Vehicle

At the time of this release, bond for Acosta had not yet been set.
