Major Communication System Upgrades - Tuesday, February 12, 2019

NAPOLEONVILLE – In an effort to provide enhanced officer safety and to more efficiently communicate with the public, Sheriff Leland Falcon has completed a major revamping of the parish dispatch center and associated equipment.

The communications section handles all activities relative to the 911 system, the five parish fire departments, Acadian Ambulance and serves as the main artery between the dispatch center and law-enforcement.  The center also serves as the repository of information that is phoned in by the public and eventually gets recycled out to the Sheriff’s patrol units in the field as calls for service.

Prior to the upgrade, the center’s equipment dated back upwards of 15 years.  Because of the high costs of equipment servicing the center, there are always financial considerations to take into account.

With that said, Sheriff Falcon was the beneficiary of a goodwill gesture from Livingston Parish Sheriff Jason Ard.  Sheriff Ard donated state of the art consoles to the Sheriff’s Office along with other related materials.

The consoles were in excellent condition.  Antennas, all wiring and tower grounding systems were upgraded.  The replaced equipment was 17 years old.

The new system allows our dispatchers to see which officers radio is transmitting even if an officer says nothing on the air.

For the first time ever, we have enabled a safety feature on our radios.  There is now an officer down button that transmits an alert to our dispatch center.

Another feature on the new system is radio transmission playback which will allow an increase in the fire rating for parish fire departments.

The communication upgrade has modernized the dispatch center to a standard never seen before. The upgrades also allow for additional communications personnel in the event of an emergency.

The costs for the upgrades were a fraction of the costs if the equipment was purchased new.

While the old system was functional, it was long outdated.  The safety of all personnel and the general public is paramount.  It also allows the dispatchers to have the best resources available to them at all times.

Sheriff Falcon thanks all of our fire departments, the Assumption Parish Police Jury and Sheriff Jason Ard for making this a collaborative effort that will not only benefit our public servants but the general public as well.
