Sheriff Warns Residents of Bitcoin Sex Scam - Tuesday, November 27, 2018

DATE:             TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 2018
TO:                  ALL MEDIA OUTLETS

Assumption Parish Sheriff Leland Falcon is cautioning residents from getting lured into a fairly new scam to our area and is most recognized by the word Bitcoin.

The Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division received a complaint regarding a scam in which the victim received an email threatening to reveal intimate content within their email files and such if the resident didn’t pay money to them via service, such as Bitcoin.

The scammers send the victim’s email password to them as "proof” that they have been hacked and the account content has been compromised.  Scammers have also threatened to erase computer content if payment isn’t forwarded.  Detectives have learned that this is a common scam occurring at the present time and has even been sent to victims with no explicit content in their files.  At times, scammers may have obtained passwords from older accounts or publicly leaked password databases, which tempts the victim into believing they can pay to hide elicit content.

The subject line of the email may contain your password/old password.

If you receive a similar email, feel free to consult with the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division at 985-526-1627.  It is not recommended that you send money via Bitcoin or similar services to these scammers.

While there may be instances that are not scam-related, detectives have learned through research that there have been numerous reported similar scams recently.
