DATE:             WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2018
TO:                  ALL MEDIA OUTLETS
FROM:            SHERIFF LELAND FALCON
SUBJECT:      DEPUTIES UNDERGO TRAINING IN THE USE OF NARCAN

NAPOLEONVILLE – On Monday afternoon, representatives of Acadian Ambulance conducted a training session for Sheriff’s Office personnel in the use of Narcan, a drug used to reverse the effects of a drug overdose from Heroin or other opioid type drugs.

Narcan also referred scientifically as Narcoxone, blocks the effects of drugs made from opium or opioids.  Those drugs include Heroin, Morphine, Oxycodone, Methadone, Fentanyl, Hydrocodone, Codeine, Hydromorphone and Buprenorphine.

Opioids can dramatically reduce breathing and if given soon enough, Narcan can counter the overdose effects.

The Narcan doses will now be carried in all patrol, K-9 and detective units.

The treatment drug is being provided through the Louisiana Attorney General’s Office.

There is a cost to obtaining the drug however, Napoleonville and Paincourtville Pharmacies have paid for the initial 30 treatment kits and there are an additional 40 available when needed.

Sheriff Leland Falcon thanks Acadian Ambulance, Napoleonville Pharmacy, Paincourtville Pharmacy and the Louisiana Attorney General’s Office for their assistance in this important cause.

Sheriff Falcon also thanks all Sheriff’s Office employees who attended the training.

"Hopefully, we can curtail the dangerous use of opioids and save a life with this treatment protocol”, Sheriff Falcon said.
